Macworld 2008 Keynote (SUMMARY)

January 15, 2008

Since so many of the news outlets sites are taking nose dives I’ll do my best to live blog the summary of all the feeds I’m monitoring and supply attribution as possible. (Newest stuff at top)

[ http://www.apple.com has the new pretties. Videos for the MacBook Air available too. Store's back online. ]

ONE MORE THING? – Nope. Randy Newman’s today’s entertainment.

“Green” was a consideration in building the MacBook Air.

5 hr battery life. 2 Gb RAM. Starts at $1,799. Ships in two weeks.

Remote Disk will allow you to “borrow” an optical drive from a local mac to install software. (Hmm… kinda goofy)

802.11n + Bluetooth 2.1/EDR

It’s a wireless machine. No hard drive (only SSD). USB in case you gotta have it.

Intel shrunk the processor by 60%!!! Otellini takes stage.

45 Watt MagSafe, 1 USB 2.0 port, Micro-DVI, Audio Out

1.8″ drive. 60 Gb and 84Gb SSD options. 1.6 GHz Standard, 1.8 GHz Option — Intel Core 2 Duo (MacRumorsLive)

13.3″ widescreen display (glossy or dull? gotta know…)

MacBook Air is 0.16″ to 0.76″. The thickest part of the MacBook Air is thinner than the thinnest part of the Sony. It fits inside a envelope (MacRumorsLive)

What do you give up to achieve that goal? The thick stuff. Just make it thinner. ;)

4) Something in the air – MacBook Air. (Here we go! Red Five, I’m going in!) World’s thinnest notebook. What’s “thin”?

Chairman CEO of FOX sharing stage. Transformative approach to rental (which isn’t new). Blu-Ray mention gets applause.

New Apple TV is a software update (available in 2 weeks). Entry level AppleTV is now $229.

Photo based screen savers can be retrieved from .Mac. Music can be purchased through AppleTV. (Flickr pooped on Steve.)

[Spending a LOT of time demo'ing AppleTV 2. Making some serious emphasis here on the "how" of it all. Interesting.]

HD Rentals $4.99. 100 titles available today. (Suggests the Apple TV 2 will be too.) Completely new user interface. Suggestion engine. Previews. Fast, live search.

Apple TV v. 2 – No computer required. DVD quality. HD. Dolby 5.1. Integrated with iTunes Movie Rentals. Photos. Podcasts… Syncs with iTunes.

First run titles. Can begin watching within 30 days of download. 24 hours to watch. 1,000 movies. Available within 30 days after DVD release. Can transfer to other devices. U.S. Movie Rentals launches today. Int’l later this year. Software updates for iTunes and iPods coming.

Rentals being added as a new section of the iTunes Store. Touchstone, Miramax, MGM, Lionsgate, Newline, FOx, WB, Disney, Paramount, Universal, Sony all on board (MacRumors)

3) iTunes – 4 Billion songs sold as of last week. 20 million in a single day (record). 125 million TV shows sold.

iPod Touch – 5 new apps: Mail, Stocks, Notes, and Weather (MacRumors) available in every Touch leaving factory now. $20 upgrade for previous purchasers.

[Sounds like 1.1.3 iPhone update. ETA? Today.]

Web clips, Maps with location, customize home screen, SMS lots of people at once, chapters in videos, subtitles, lyrics (Ars)

2) iPhone – 20,000 sold/day. 200th day now 4 million units sold. 20% marketshare. SDK on track for February.

Time Machine spawned a new product: Time Capsule (500Gb -$299 and 1Tb – $499)

1) Leopard – 5 million copies, 3 months. Huge success. 20% of Mac base up to date.

Steve takes the stage. “Awesome year. Thanks. Clearly something in the air. 4 things to talk about.”

House lights dimming.

Ars reports security is clamping down on the cameras.

Best Macworld Expo KEYNOTE Coverage (Links)

January 15, 2008

[A special welcome today to our Google Reader friends. Please subscribe to the RSS feed of this blog.]

The very best of the live JobsNote coverage (in no particular order):

Beware – Looks like Twitter is going to take nose dives on us during the keynote… TUAW site too.

So, I’m going to summarize the sites that ARE up in real-time as I can… HERE

C|Net
MacRumorsLive
Engadget

AppleInsider
Ars Technica (twitter) Is my early favorite
Macworld (blog & Twitter) Is my early favorite, too
Fortune (the link changed overnight. Someone know their new “correct” addy?)
Hoping someone will have Qik coverage… (Only an entire CATEGORY! Loving Qik!)

And, of course, the Apple sanctioned video will appear sometime today.

Feel free to link to others (IRC for instance) in the comments.

.Mac (Apple Computer, Inc.)

iPhone Shuffle and Nano Pix

January 15, 2007

Great iPhone concepts… OK, the Photoshopping is coming online finally and Spymac not only has pics of “the book” Mr. Jobs used to deliver the keynote (Cingluar’s CEO Mr. Sigman could use some help) but they also have some interesting side by sides of what the Shuffle and Nano iPhone’s might look like.

MacWorld LIVE Coverage

January 9, 2007

There is no better coverage right now than at Engadget (just have to reload a lot).

http://www.macrumorslive.com/ would be a close second.

Apple Legal

December 26, 2006

Talk about your Infinite Loop! This legal poop just won’t go away.

Law.com posted a new article regarding the backdating situation and that Mr. Jobs has hired representation apparently. Probably a good move to seperate your peas and carrots as Apple’s interests may not necessarily be in HIS own best interests. Not saying he has anything to hide. In fact, quite the opposite. I think he’s probably had his own counsel for some time now on the matter. Probably the first thing to do in that situation is call your attorney first.

I sold my position in Apple Nov. 21 at about 88 and change. Kinda glad I did and kinda have a niggling to get back in and ride it back up for a quickie off of MacWorld San Francisco. But, if AAPL appears to be delisted (would that REALLY ever happen!?) I think I’ll watch the circus from the sidelines.
