WOW! Disqus For Blog Comments

August 8, 2007

A new (and IMHO far superior) threaded commenting system is emerging. First sighting seems to be at Mr. Wilson’s A VC blog. So far I’m liking it. A lot! Mr. Wilson’s firm appears to have invested in Disqus. One nice thing about him and the companies he invests in… he’s quite objective about using them and being open to feedback. Have a looksee.

A Startup Costs HOW Much!?

June 20, 2007

Premise: Guy Kawasaki knows what he’s doing. And despite better advice I highly recommend you kiddies try this at home!

Mr. Kawasaki’s startup, Truemors, set him back $12,709.09 in startup costs. Keep in mind… he’s the guy who wrote “Art of the Start” and funded more youngco’s than I’ve even worked in for crying out loud!

I’d like to contrast Truemors with Fake Steve Jobs (one of the 100 most popular blogs).

It costs NOTHING to start a blog on (independent) or at (owned by Google). TypePad will set you back some change (and is quite good). There’s Facebook… MySpace… there’s a lot of free choices for blogging these days.

Granted, FSJ is about the most popular figure on the scene right now. Yes, there’s a FakeSteveBallmer. But, do you really think is going to be worth anyone’s time. Nah. Now, is already taken (maybe not so safe for work). That person would normally be out less than $200 in startup costs (autorenewing, protected domains for the next 10 years). But, whoever’s behind it REALLY bootstrapped. ZERO cost! They’re hosting on a free platform. Fred Wilson thinks FSJ is raking in $200K+ annually.

Nice work if you can get it. Money for nothing and your chicks are free. Wonder if there’s a VC model in there somewhere? “I’ll seed you $0. Now. Go write like an iGod.”

I Heart Dave Winer

June 16, 2007

If I was a single chick I think I’d date Dave Winer. Heck I’d probably date Fred Wilson too. Except I’d be mighty tempted to tell Mr. Winer I was 39 and Mr. Wilson I was 25. 😉

No worries Gotham Gal (as if!) I’m a 39 y/o, married male. Building my next big thing and we’ll see if the age deal really is an impediment to funding a killer app one day real soon. 🙂

Openads Funded. $5mm

June 13, 2007

Congrats to the Openads team. Talk about timing! But, that $5 million’s not going to last nearly long enough. My little startup will have THAT problem soon 🙂

I’ve been a happy PHPMyAdsNew operator for about a year now. Pretty slick stuff. Easy to implement and rock solid on my XServes. Open source, so the price is right. Little PHP and MySQL know-how and you can print your own money.

That said… Here’s where the timing gets funny. Just hinted at Fred Wilson about Openads via his blog & I upgraded just yesterday to the M3 package and deployed my first two campaigns this morning before the news broke.

So, if your site needs to be ad powered and you’re inclined to sell your own inventory… Openads all the way!

EDIT: Openads blog here…
