Sample MP3

September 22, 2006

I’m going to upload an MP3 of a MUCH improved machine read text. I’ll be interested to see what everyone thinks.

The reason for this has some personal gratification and is a bit self serving. See, Grandpa’s eyesite was shot the last several years of his life. He loved his ham radio and all the print publications that went with his hobby. One thing that kept him sharp those last few hard years was the machine voice rendering of his favorite periodicals.

I gritted my teeth every time I heard that tinny sound. But, after each visit I knew it was good medicine for gramps. I think he’d LOVE where the technology is going.

QT 7.1.3 Flash Playback

September 13, 2006

So, I’m updating to iT7 yesterday and the iTS tells me it needs a QT update to 7.1.3. Okie dokie.

Well, as I’m double checking to see that it didn’t tromp on my QT Pro key I see that Flash playback is now a check box on the prefs pane. HUH!?

Turns out the iPod games are Flash based. Makes sense then that the iPod (a QuickTime device if there ever was one) would inherit the Flash goodness.

VERY slick!

REVIEW: iTunes 7 QT 7.1.3

September 12, 2006

Aside from iTunes Store probably getting the snot kicked out of it right now… I like it.

Trying to buy Hitchhikers Guide (Ian loves the robot) and it’s saying the Store’s having some problems. Must be fixed now… Single click purchase a second ago worked just fine. Pulling down 1.22 Gb so far. Also has a “pause all” button. And IT’S WIDESCREEN!!! Oh yeah, I’m liking it a LOT right about now. Except for the speed of the download. Why they didn’t do a Bittorrent style distributed download I’ll never know!?

Interface is tidied up. Furniture is still where we left it… just different icons now. Probably shades of Leopard.

Also, it now reminds you to back your purchased stuff up. That’s a nice touch seeing as how Time Machine is coming soon as a feature in Leopard.

QuickTime 7.1.3 appears to allow for Flash playback too in the preferences. Dont’ know if that’s only QT Pro or not (as I don’t have the non-pro version to test from). Wonder if that’s new?

Coverage doesn’t stop here. I’ll be updating on the streaming situation and the software update timing. Stay tuned!

Store is back up. Am downloading iTunes7 now via iTunes website (not available yet in Software Update).

iTunes 7 requires a QuickTime update to 7.1.3! Well, sure it does! 🙂

Apple Stores, Sept 12

September 7, 2006

I’m betting a BIG Apple overhaul on Sept 12. Here’s what seems to make sense to me:

You have the Apple Expo in Paris show going. Lord knows what nose thumbing they’ll do at the French legislators. I’m supposing Apple told the Frenchies, “Lookit, we’re coming to Paris. We’re going to do a big reveal in your town and YOU want to legislate iTunes and the FairPlay DRM!? Fine… we’ll stay home. We can do this anywhere.” Pardon!? Mon diue!

You have the Big Show in California where “Showtime” seems to be the theme. Deduction = iTMS full-length movies are announced.

You have 10.4.8 currently in seed to us developers. Now what would make a LOT of sense is to announce Bittorrent goodness baked into 10.4.8. Makes sense for movie downloads right? And, that hat tips an inherent reveal of what will come in Leopard.

You have Ron Johnson (veep Apple Retail) at ThinkEquity. Thinking new video iPod announcement/hands on demos. Plus, I’d further predict a jab at Vista losing it’s top champion yesterday.

I’m gonna wager 10.4.8 is released on the 12th, that it contains updated goodness for the announcements from the days events AND if it’s not released on the 12th there is a release date promised.

And, while my speculative wheels of rumor are rolling… I bet there’s and Apple Store tie in for super fast downloads of movies (or a come in and get a discount movie while you’re in the store kinda thing) to increase foot traffic ahead of the holidays.

Ze Frank at TEDTalks 2004

September 5, 2006

K. So, I’m going through my podcasts checking out what’s new in the world and apparently my TEDTalks podcast was updated over the long weekend and lo and behold! Ze Frank delivered a talk at TED 2004! WHAT!?

More interesting still is the Genre meta for his session is a bit… curious. Don’t cha think?

He’s a huge influence in my life. 😉

So much that I was trying for all of 45 seconds this weekend to get Logan to do a Power Move to send in… sucked. Horribly. No way that’s getting submitted. It goes in the “vault of embarassing moments”. Ah, leverage for the tender years…

iTMS v. Wal-Mart

September 5, 2006

I’ve posted about Wal-Mart before. I admire the heck out of them for one simple reason: They save consumers a ton of money.

On several occassions I worked closely with the packaging group, warehousing group and with the buyer trainer within Wal-Mart. They’re an amazingly focused outfit!
